Basic Tips for Your First Modeling Casting

For an aspiring model, a casting can be the start of a memorable career hopefully spanning across many years. The classic Polaroid photo is one opportunity for a model to enchant and capture the attention of a casting manager, but it doesn’t stop there. The portfolio images are just the first step and then comes the all-important real life, face to face castings. In other words, your big chance at leaving a lasting and positive first impression.

At these castings models are expected to look their best but also to appear somewhat like a blank canvas, a casting manager wants to be able to see the true look of the model and imagine how they’d suit a variety of looks. A great rule of thumb when going to castings calls is to keep it all to the minimum. Your beauty and talent should be the thing they remember the most, not something totally outrageous like 8-inch platform heels and a tartan top hat!

Making Your First Castings Successful

Keep your outfit simple

Your clothing should be form fitting, yet not extremely tight, in order to show off your look but not restrict you when you’re asked to pose or show off your best walk! Opt for neutral colors as well, you’re not here to impress with your amazing wardrobe so stick to the basic colors. A classic casting outfit usually means black or blue skinny jeans, a neutral tank or t-shirt, and a good pair of heels. The simplest outfits are the best when you want your natural beauty to shine.

Don’t wear lots of makeup

If in doubt, go without! Castings don’t require a full face of makeup, keep it VERY light – we’re saying no to reds or hot pink lipsticks and definitely no to purples, pinks or greens on the eyes. Keep your makeup natural, this means a touch of concealer, some BB cream, a light layer of mascara and a skin tone lipstick or gloss. Basic makeup allows those in charge of the casting to really see your features.

Heels, Heels, Heels!

When attending a casting, models typically follow one rule: the bigger the heels, the better. Never show up in flats or with sneakers on! It’s OK to wear them around town on your way to the casting but once you get to the building you need to change into your heels before you walk in. Even when worn with the most casual outfit, a good pair of heels can make your body look longer and leaner, and also put the finishing touches on your outfit.

Opt for a clean, simple hairstyle

Try a simple ponytail or a bun. Your hair should be pulled back and out of the face. If your hair is too short, style it in a cute way style but make sure you don’t have any bangs covering your face. You just want to frame your beautiful face and not draw any attention away from it!

It’s all about the little details

Pay attention to even the smallest details of your physical appearance, which means things like… Neutral nails please! Go for French manicure or American manicure or any light pinks or browns. Think flesh tones. This gives off a put-together vibe and shows you prepared for the casting and didn’t just roll up! Keep everything looking neat and tidy and always carry a spare clean Tee in your bag, you never know what could happen on your way! Most importantly, have your portfolio and any other required documents with you.
